Day 23: The Needles to Lymington

The spacious Viano is a step up from the cramped back seat of the Mazda if I can remember not to park on a slope. It was a windy old night. Gravity and a shaking car slid me off the inflatable sleeping mat — every hour.

I brew a warming cup of coffee and walk briskly up the headland to see The Needles in the early morning light. Then a short drive to Yarmouth and a hike back to Alum Bay. The West Coast walk is beautiful, varied, and dramatic — a series of historic forts and picturesque bays. The weather is superb and I relax on the beach for a while before catching the bus back to Yarmouth and the ferry to Lymington.

Fort Victoria: “Target sighted!”.
Fort Victoria nature trail: Some of the locals are less chatty than others.

Walk distance: 6 miles.

Total distance: 325 miles.
