I wake early again, despite the comfortable campsite. I am showered, packed, and off before anyone else stirs. It is a beautiful morning and a rare chance to explore the empty lanes through Polperro.
It is another blistering hot day for a strenuous hike through majestic scenery. I am dripping with sweat and it is only 7:30 am.
A ferry takes me across to Fowey, but the town is too busy. Grabbing a coffee and slice of raspberry crumble cake from a bakery, I head back out on the trail to find a peaceful spot for a lunch. How long can you survive on a cake diet?
The afternoon heat is relentless and I am relieved to make the final climb up to the daymark tower at Gribbin Head, before descending into Par for the train home. I am surprised to find a stone marker near the China Clay Works telling me it is only 3.5 miles to the Eden Project. On reflection, it makes sense, as it was built in a former china clay pit.
Dorset and South Devon were spectacular, but my first three days in Cornwall were consistently stunning. How can I fail to fall in love with a place where everyone calls me “My lovely”?
Walk distance: 15 miles.
Total distance: 616 miles.
I’ve survived 55 years so far on a mostly cake diet Tony. The secret is accompanying it with plenty of beer 😊.
I am already following your guidance! 🙂
Excellent progress Tony. You’ll be round to Northumberland in no time at the rate you are going!
Make sure you bring that weather with you – you really have been lucky in that regard,
Take care
I think the west coast of Scotland will slow me down a bit!
