Day 57: Perranporth to Newquay

The early morning air is heavy with moisture, so everything is slightly damp. I want to reduce the amount of spare clothing I carry, and tried washing my clothes in the shower yesterday morning, drying them during the day on my backpack. It seems to have failed miserably, as my socks are still wet. The weather did not help. Fortunately, I have plenty of spare pairs.

Perran Sands Beach is deserted, apart from a few dog walkers. I only have a short distance to walk today, so take the opportunity to leisurely explore the long beach and small caves.

The driving wind and rain hit at Ligger Point, making for some dramatic, if rather gloomy, scenery.

Approaching Penhale Point, there is a sign: “Filming in progress ahead – Set dressing of distressing nature”. Sounds interesting. I WhatsApp the family for more information. Hayley, my daughter, informs me they are filming the Game of Thrones prequel series on nearby Holywell Beach. Wow! I am a huge fan of of the novels and the TV series, apart from the disastrous final series.

Sadly, the beach is empty. More dunes to cross.

The rain comes and goes all afternoon. I bump into Lorraine again, walking in the opposite direction. She has been swimming. Braver than me!

Porth Joke.

I chose a campsite just before Newquay, the plan being to walk through the town in the early morning, when it is less busy.

Families and couples only? Looks like I need to find a buddy for the night.

The facilities are excellent and the site is great value for £5. It is novel to pitch in daylight. I avoid the spare pitches next to the pond. I am learning.

Walk distance: 10 miles.

Total distance: 804 miles.
