A beautiful early morning walk through Chester to catch the train back to Shotton.

A grim industrial section connects with the pretty Wirral Way at the market town of Neston. The path follows an old railway track through woodland, surrounded by birdsong.

It’s a glorious day — t-shirt weather — so I’m grateful for the cooling breeze on the Hoylake promenade.

I pop into a community cafe via the wrong entrance, finding myself in the middle of an antenatal class. I apologise and sidle round the edge of the hall, trying not to appear conspicuous, which is tricky with a backpack and hiking poles. Some of the men look as though they want to throw on a pair of hiking boots and join me in a last bid for the open road. Too late!
Fashionable New Brighton heralds my arrival at the Mersey.

The colourful ferry takes us across the river, accompanied by “Ferry Cross the Mersey”, which is now, of course, an earworm.

“You dancing?” “You asking?”
“I’m asking!” “I’m dancing!”
I’m trying to remember The Liver Birds theme tune but all I come up with is The Likely Lads. What do you expect from a Geordie?

I have to wait several minutes to get a shot without someone posing for a selfie.

The Travelodge where I’m staying is right on the riverfront which gives me a perfect base to explore a little of the street art and grab a beer at the fine Baltic Fleet. I like Liverpool already and look forward to exploring a little more tomorrow evening.

Walk distance: 25 miles.
Total distance: 3,132 miles.
Now I have the theme from The Liver Birdsstuck in my head; thanks for that! 😉
