Day 38: Start Point to Salcombe

My first wild camp. I slept surprisingly well despite a nightmare that someone stole my tent in the dark and I woke up in only my sleeping bag. Not sure how that’s possible with a sewn-in groundsheet, but there’s no logic in dreams. Ben also stayed overnight, so I brew a coffee and we chat while watching the cloudy sunrise.

I’m on the trail again by 7 am and Peartree Cove reveals a barely clothed woman communing with the sun on the beach. That makes up for the naked chap last week.

Two Stones.

There are several stonechats and cirl buntings, the latter only found in South Devon.

Rohan?

Elender Cove is home to the prettiest tiny beach I have seen. A family arrive and a young girl runs across the virgin sand, laughing and making footprint trails.

I reach beautiful Salcombe by early afternoon and enjoy the sun with a couple of pints of Tribute at the Victoria Inn. This is one of the advantages of not driving home at the end of the walk. This may be my favourite walk so far. Every step from the lighthouse at Start Point has something to admire. The Lulworth Ranges were majestic with the sheer scale and power of the cliffs and valleys. The Lyme Regis Undercliffs were magical. This walk has beauty in the intricate detail of the rocks, coves, and rugged coastline. Can the rest of the British coastline live up to my recent walks?

Walk distance: 10 miles.

Total distance: 530 miles.

  1. Hi Tony,
envious of the Tribute from the tap, have had to content myself with the bottled stuff which is ok.

BTW, forget to mention that if you have Tesco vouchers you can buy your Senior Railcard with them at a third of the price.
