Day 51: Porthleven to Penzance

Porthleven is sleeping off a collective hangover, given how busy the pubs were last night.

I pass a memorial for mariners drowned on this part of the coast, commemorating the passing of the Grylls’ Act of 1808, since when bodies cast up by the sea are laid to rest in the nearest consecrated ground.

On Bullion Cliff I see my first rare Cornish choughs. Time for a digital zoom, regardless of the quality.

There is a narrow, winding track through pretty ferns up to Trewavas Head. I step aside for a few energetic, early morning trail runners.

This is Cornwall! Perched on the cliffs are two engine houses that form the remains of Wheal Trewavas copper mine (1834 – 1846).

Further along the path, I reach Wheal Prosper engine house, which was not successful, despite the name.

Leaving Bessy’s Cove.

The mist obscures the top of St Michael’s Mount in the distance, but clears as I reach Marazion. The lady at the cake shop says there are dolphins in the bay. I sit with my raspberry blondie cake and coffee, scanning the water, but no luck.

The sun appears as I stroll along the long sandy beach into Penzance, before catching the train home. The train is full of loud, drunken people, spilling out from the races and other Saturday events. Not pretty.

Walk distance: 15 miles.

Total distance: 717 miles.
