Although the wind and rain woke me around 1am, I slept for a record 12 hours. I think the early start yesterday, plus the long walk, caught up with me. It’s a misty morning. I rustle up some porridge and stroll down to the deserted beach. There are fresh animal tracks in the dunes, so I had a little company last night.
The mist creates a moody walk through the trees.
Leaving the forest, the path winds across a marsh, making use of an old racing track with tyres strewn at each bend.
A few curious friends approach for an early morning chat.
I stop off for a delicious cooked breakfast at the Kidwelly Deli. There is an impressive 13th century castle in the town, used for the opening scene of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I can almost hear the sound of coconuts in the distance.
In the afternoon, I follow the River Towy and see my first Red Kite. A worrying sign at Ferryside warns “Trespassers will be composted”. I pass several ruined buildings.
Near Towy Castle Farm, there is a chap leaning on his garden fence, enjoying this magnificent view across the river. He bought the cottage a few years ago for the view and to plant 7,000 trees; a lovely legacy.
I reach Carmarthen at dusk, enjoying a hot meal and shower, at the Rose and Crown.
Walk distance: 17 miles.
Total distance: 1,360 miles.
The river view is gorgeous, I would be very happy to have it on my doorstep.
