Day 361: Inverie to Rubha Ard Slisneach

A glorious morning for my final day in Knoydart. It would be disrespectful to Ladhar Bheinn to climb another Munro today, nothing to do with my weariness, so I’ll hike north once more across the peninsula to Inverguseran and explore the coastline east to Croulin.

The farm at Inverguseran has a superb outlook over Skye and the Cuillin.

Further along the coastline, swathes of green grass, tranquillity, and gorgeous views make for a perfect wild camping spot, but I guess it’s too far from the village for most people and not on the way to anywhere.

A young woman appears from the rear of a farmhouse, jumps on an ATV and rides down the hill for a brief chat before bouncing along a rough track.

I find her sitting on a log, watching three builders at work on a new home for the farm owner’s son.

Clambering up the hillside behind the works, could you possibly have a finer view from your front window?

It’s taken longer than I thought to get here. I won’t make it to Croulin, but I’m happy to make my way down to the grass behind a bay, sit and enjoy the view for a while. I should have brought my towel.

One final return walk through the glen, snow just still visible on Ladhar Bheinn.

The Old Forge is heaving with a lively RNLI gathering. Tents are beginning to sprout up on the shoreline like green shoots in spring. The right time to be leaving.

Next day

Another beautiful morning.

The Western Isles ferry arrives to take me across the water to Inverie for the last time.

The prow points to Rum, my next destination, although it may be some time, as I have my double hernia operation scheduled for Sunday. Farewell, Knoydart, the highlight of my coast walk to date.

Date of walk: Wednesday 22 April 2026.

Walk distance: 14 miles.

Total distance: 5,756 miles.

    1. Thanks, Mike. It was three weeks ago now, and well on the way to recovery. I hiked the Darent Valley Path last weekend and just started on the North Downs Way on Friday. Scotland and backpacking will have to wait a bit longer. 😉

    1. Thanks. All well. I’m more than happy to be knocked out for the op. I had a local for a delicate op a few years ago and it started to wear off before they finished. 😬
